GIFs and Dreams

Animation has always been a dream of mine ever since I was a small child. I considered studying animation in college but elected to study painting as it seemed to fit my passions more appropriately. However, I still remain a huge fan of animation. In a class that I am currently enrolled in at the University of Florida, I was given the opportunity to learn how to create an animated gif as part of an assignment. What a fantastic opportunity this has become. This was my first ever attempt at doing what I had dreamed of as a little boy. It was pretty satisfying to produce this small set of images.

This is an image I created for a book cover for a friend of mine. The book is about entrepreneurs and what it takes to make something from nothing. I thought the image of a plant bursting through a crack in the pavement was relevant metaphor.

Bernini's David

I was looking through a book that I have about Classical Atelier Paintings and many of the exercises within were paintings from sculpture. So I wanted to try one. A program on TV about Bernini helped me choose this sculpture of David. The image is reversed from the original (not that I drew it in reverse). I just felt that it was a stronger composition for my piece.

So, because of school and other life commitments, I have not made a post in quite a long time. I actually haven't made anything creative other than sketches since my second daughter was born. However, over the Thanksgiving, I was showing my sister-in-law how to use an wacom pad and did a quick 15 min sketch of a bird. This created a craving to get back to making work.

I have really been inspired recently by Peter de Seve and his illustration work. I did a few sketches based on his characters because I really respond to his work. I have also recently been inspired by political cartoons and the works of Nori Tominaga. So in responce to his work I created this piece of President Obama.

So long story short, I had a friend ask me to draw for him a pig holding a gravy boat while doing the heisman pose. This was the result.

Nursery Ideas

My wife Maria and I are anxiously awaiting our second daughter next month. We have been shooting around ideas for the new nursery, and we decided to go with Flamingos. We thought it was appropriate since we live in Florida, and our oldest daughter Lorelei is obsessed with Flamingos, or "Mingos", right now. So I have been working up some ideas of what I am going to paint and this is one of the sketches.

IF Fearless

I was already working on this image when I saw this week's topic, but I thought it could apply.

I worked on this from a picture of Lincoln where he was facing in the other direction and I originaly painted it that way. But I flipped to help see any errors I had in the likeness. After working on it, I felt that the image worked better facing this way.

Intuos!

So, for my Birthday this year, I purchased an Intuos 4. After reading some blogs and reviews I decided that this would be an excellent addition to my artistic arsenol. And it is AMAZING! I absolutely love it. I question myself on not getting one years ago. Extremely easy to use, and oh the things you can do with it. Here is my FIRST finished piece using the Intuos.

Wouldn't it be a wonderful advantage to see as far "ahead" as a soaring eagle? I thought I would show this one in steps of progression because I love seeing other's process. I started out with this pencil sketch. I added the tones in gray scale.

I then added color.

Finally, I put in the wispy clouds and other details.

Detective

This is my submission to Illustration Friday this week. The topic was "detective". Apparently, I am on a canine kick. The bloodhound was my first impulse so I went with it. I worked on this for about two and a half hours. I sketched it out first, and then added the tones with photoshop. I deceided to keep it in gray scale because I thought it added to the theme of the detective topic. I thought it added a Bogart quality to it.

After being inspired by one of my fellow artists on IF, I was compelled to take the image of the Wiener that I had done for "linked" and see what I could do with him in Photoshop. This is the result. pretty pleased with this first attempt. Learned quite a lot.

This is my first submission to Illustration Friday. The topic for the week was "linked" and I came to the idea of linked sausages. That then lead me to dachshunds and the idea of the dog being fixed on, or "linked to", a sausage on a table. I hoped to create an image that showed that the two wieners were linked in multiple ways. Not only being linked by a common name, but also by the dogs appetite.

Illustration Friday

Read a great story this morning about Penelope Dullaghan, an illustrator who quit her job at an ad agency to pursue her current career as an illustrator. I found her story to be extraordinarily inspiring. She has created a brilliant website called IllustrationFridaycom. The website suggests a random topic each Friday and asks artists, amateur and professional alike, to create and image based on the topic. There is no award and notoriety to be found, but you do get to see the other artists images and discuss with each other you approach and goal for the image. I think it is a great idea and hopefully I can become involved in the process and share my experience here.
